Swing Band Revives Concert Tradition
This summer FOESP brought music back to the park with a concert in honor of Assisted Living Week. Over 100 seniors from six assisted living facilities enjoyed the 10 piece Fairview Park Swing Band in the lower beach pavilion on September 13. FOESP Secretary Eric Deutsch’s inspiration for the event came from his experience working with seniors and the rich history of music in the park. In the early 1900’s Edgewater Park was known for Sunday concerts, and a bandshell at the upper level was used until the 1940’s. “The seniors were able to enjoy both the band and a beautiful view of the beach and the lake,” Eric said. Detroit Shoreway Community Development lent folding chairs to the event, and park staff helped by moving a number of picnic tables into the pavilion. Court Community Service Workers also helped. State Park Naturalist Carol Ward welcomed the crowd and provided information about the park. Thanks to all for helping to make this event a terrific success!
